Langston’s talent on campus continues to grow as a variety of students are paving a way for their futures. One rising artist on campus is Reese Brown, otherwise known as DaProphet. Reese is a sophomore business marketing major.
He grew up in Del City, where he developed a love for different varieties of music from playing in the marching band. This played a major role in his musical journey as DaProphet. As he said, “ Band took over my entire life.”
Around 7th grade he started to focus on creating his own music, making beats and perfecting his craft. Having to deal with family separation and moving constantly throughout Oklahoma, it was difficult to figure out who he was. His writing gave him this breakthrough where he could express himself in ways that helped him through his struggles.
“Collaborations and reliability” are what really pushed DaProphet to pursue music and make a name for himself. Inspriations for the style of music he creates are Bryson Tiller, J-Cole and Drake. This “generational impact” is what he strives to achieve in his music career. Not only is he versatile but his effort is what makes him unique.
“The art is the work that I put behind it, actually making music that’s a brand, that’s marketable, is the true art behind the music I want my listeners to hear. People don’t grind or are willing to put in the work to make it to this music industry,” he said.
The chapters in his life are what make his music so relatable. This growth in life is what “makes my music better, I want to continue to evolve over time.” That’s what DaProphet is and has been doing with his recent album “Cardiac Torment.” He’s been giving out bracelets, putting posters all over Langston and posting music videos of Langston’s community.
These new chapters in his life are what people love about DaProphet. The struggle of a college student and a person finding the way to escape is what he focuses on in his music. Despite being a band student, he is still working to giving out content frequently with new music specifically “dedicated to Langston.”
