Langston University faculty, staff, and students gathered in the auditorium to celebrate the annual 126th convocation. The convocation included addresses from President Ruth-Ray Jackson and Dr. Alonzo Peterson, a choir performance, Student Government Association (SGA) inaugurations, and announcements from Activities Coordinator Jonell St. Fort. As a member of SGA and the choir, I had the pleasure of experiencing these announced changes within Langston University culture and the convocation itself.
During the presidential address, Jackson discussed new polices, maintenance, and renovations, and she talked about Langston University being a 1890 institution. She also talked about the WM Conrad Veterans Memorial partnership. She states, ‘it unites service and education,’ during her address. Jackson has held many positions before her succession as the President of Langston University. For example, Jackson served as a high school English teacher, assistant principal, and principal. After serving eleven years at Louisiana University, she later came to Langston University, working her way up to the 17th president of Langston University, where she currently resides.
The Langston University Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Ezeakacha (Dr E). The choir has been under his direction since the last semester of the academic year. Dr. E selected pieces to perform at the convocation. For example, ”Order my steps in your word, “Dear Langston,” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.’ Dr. E takes pride in his craftsmanship, molding the Langston University Concert Choir.
As a member of the student government association, I have the chance and opportunity to be a part of active change.
The Student Government Association had the pleasure of swearing into their offices for the academic year of 2025-2026. Student Government Association President Elise Thompson, sworn into her current role. Equipped for the new change for the student body, Vice President Jasilyn Spivey said, ”So many have Grown.” Spivey strives to make an impact in her new role.
For some students, this will be their last convocation as students here at Langston University.
