Langston University students are voicing their concerns about unresolved housing problems, including plumbing issues, key accessibility, and maintenance delays. Many students have filed maintenance requests that have either taken weeks to resolve or have gone completely unanswered.   Rayven Thurman, a graduating senior who lives in the Scholars Inn Apartments at Langston University, is one of them. “I was originally living in [building] 15 but we had plumbing issues, and I had to move in the middle of the semester … they only gave us like five days to move, so…

OPINION: Campus Housing Problems, from the Parent Perspective

Facing campus housing issues doesn’t only affect students; it affects the parents too.   Parents know about the problems their students deal with in housing, issues like broken front doors, broken ceiling fans, faulty shower heads, or bad outlets. The three big main problems dealt with regularly are are mold growth, missing door keys and apartment flooding. I personally have dealt with all three during my current junior semester. Trina Goff, my mother, saw a lizard come out from the sink when I experienced flooding, and she heard about me having…

COLUMN: How to get your maintenance issues fixed

As much fun as we students have here at our dear Langston university, sometimes we also experience “uh ohs.” Some are controllable; others maybe not, but when those “uh ohs” occur, the residential assistants are the first on call; they really are the Robins to our Batmans. Now some issues are silly: maybe you got locked out of your room or are arguing with a roommate, but the silliest issues of all are MAINTENANCE ISSUES. *LOUD DRAMATIC GASP*  So what do you do? FOCUS UP! Let’s get serious and pay…

POLITICAL COLUMN: Tariffs, and what they do to America

To understand what is going on with the American economy today it is also important to know what tariffs are and what they have done to and for the country in the past. Tariffs are a tax imposed on a country for the imported goods that enter the country; meaning if a country wants to send goods to America, they must pay the tariff for those goods to enter America. Tariffs are usually set to fixed percentage of the price of the goods. We can see some of the earliest…

OPINION: How to get your groove back after a breakup

Everybody wants a wholesome love story that you can tell for generations, the thought of love and happiness with someone who is pure and holds a special place in your heart. Well, this is college, bud. Things happen, and emotions make it feel like the world is crashing down before you. If that’s not the case, then you’re probably trying to find ways to “glow up” and heal, so the person who hurt you or you hurt someone, can see what they missed.  Well, sista or brotha, here we are…

REVIEW: The Radical Honesty of “Sinners”

Sinners is a very intentional film that perfectly captured the differences not only within African American society, but also within African American spirituality and religion. As we know, Christianity has played a major role in black culture, but before Christianity, there were other spiritual practices such as Hoodoo.  According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Hoodoo is defined as “a body of practices of sympathetic magic traditional especially among African Americans in the southern U.S.” Ironically, Hoodoo is often viewed as demonic or ungodly within the Christian community. Samuel Gichohi, a Langston…
