Langston Lions Takes Tough Loss In Season Opener

For the 2024–25 season opener, the Langston University football team traveled to the University of Central Oklahoma on September 7. A crushing 72-0 victory for the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) marked the end of the rivalry between UCO and Langston University.

At halftime, UCO had a 49-0 advantage after dominating Langston in the first half. The opening kickoff was returned for a score by UCO cornerback Kobey Stephens, a fourth-year senior from Wewoka, Oklahoma, who instantly set the tone by electrifying the home fans. Demari Ward, Senior, Ag Business Major from Dallas, said “The crowd definitely shifted from a positive standpoint to a negative standpoint.” The offense of UCO was firing on all cylinders, scoring points quickly, and the defense was smothering Langston at every opportunity. UCO maintained possession of both ends of the ball while Langston was unable to establish any rhythm. UCO was clearly in control of the match by the half, and the outcome looked all but certain.

In the third quarter, UCO continued to roll over Langston, maintaining their preparation on both sides of the ball. UCO’s offense marched down the field with ease, adding to their already massive lead. Though Langston finally showed signs of life, moving the ball more effectively and gaining a few first downs, they still couldn’t find the end zone. UCO’s defense tightened up whenever Langston threatened, shutting down any potential scoring opportunities despite Langston’s improved effort. “Really it was flat and tried to give a spark, but there was no spark,” said Justin Calvin, Langston’s Long Snapper UCO’s control of the game remained firm, leaving Langston frustrated and scoreless as the quarter ended.

UCO continued to roll in the fourth half, piling on more points and keeping Langston scoreless to secure a commanding 72-0 victory. Their offense remained sharp, consistently finding gaps in Langston’s defense, while the Bronchos’ defense allowed no room for Langston to gain any momentum. UCO’s relentless pressure on both sides of the ball left Langston struggling to make any significant plays. The lopsided victory marked a strong season opener for UCO, showcasing their depth and execution. Meanwhile, Langston, now 0-1 for the season, will need to regroup and make adjustments moving forward. The game served as a powerful demonstration, leaving Langston looking for answers heading into their next matchup.

Langston’s next matchup will be an away game in Pineville, LA, against Louisiana Christian on September 21 at 6 p.m. After a tough opening loss, Langston will need to reset and come out strong in this game to regain momentum for the season. “I don’t believe one game defines them at all, there’s a lot left of ball left.” says Demari Ward. A win on the road would not only boost their confidence but also set the tone for their push toward the playoffs. With limited opportunities to make up ground, this game is crucial for Langston to stay in postseason contention. “We’re never going to play like that for the rest of the season, and I think we’re going to show you all this Saturday that we’re still like that.” said Langston Lions starting Offensive lineman, Cameron Moore. They will need to improve in all phases of the game, especially after their struggles against UCO. A victory in Pineville could be the turning point they need to get back on track.
