For Homecoming week, the Comedy show happened on October 17th, was located in the Auditorium and was scheduled to start at 9 p.m.. The comedy show was hosted by Dj Red, an MC who is a Langston alum and comedian. The show featured B Simone, Billy Sorrells, Mr. Bankshot and Derrick Keener.
Samuel Gichohi, a junior Broadcast Journalism major, attended this event and thought “the event was pretty good, it was very interactive.” He was most excited to see B Simone, but “enjoyed Mr. Bankshot the most.” Gichohi loved how each comedian had “games, and had shouted out each fraternity and sorority, and watched them stroll in the aisles.” He hopes that at the next comedy show, the LU activities board will bring DC Youngfly or the 85 South Show.
According to a Gazette poll of 100 students, 75% came to see B Simone, 13% wanted to see Mr. Bankshot, and the remaining were excited to see Bubba Dub.
BriLynne Smith, senior with a major in business management “enjoyed the event overall because they didn’t have a comedy show last year.” She also said, “I enjoyed the event because I was with friends, as far as the quality of the show I don’t think it was that good.” Smith liked Derrick Keener the most because he told more jokes than the other comedians. “Everybody else was relying on the games they played with the crowd.” This year the comedy show was not what Smith expected. “I did not expect the twerk competitions and it was very messy, but nothing was surprising because we have the fizz app.”
Bracy Odom, a senior English major, and a member of student activities board thought overall the event was good and “spoke with students who didn’t go and felt like they missed out.” Odom felt that “the interactions with the crowd were very lighthearted and playful. They were indulging in taking part of the good time we have here at Langston.” She thought it was “challenging, booking comedy artist because we did not know sooner about the switch up.” Even after securing a date and payment, not everything is guaranteed 100%. “We are just as disappointed as you guys because we’ve been doing the work,” said Odom. SAB first sat down and came up with two to three comedians each, then Asia Cockrell, the activates coordinator, talked to vendors. Lastly, they factored in budgets, and let students choose by conducting “polls on Instagram and the Langston Group-me,” said Odom.
