After three long years of absence, Langston University’s very own Radio Station, KALU 89.3, is back on the air. Langston students in the broadcast journalism program will be hosting their individual shows all week, which can be heard on car or home radios. Every host will have different genres to play, different hot topics, and, of course, different personalities.
Priceless Beats is a hiphop and rap radio show run by Isaiah Price, a sophomore Broadcast Journalism major. “I chose hiphop and rap because that’s mainly what I listen to, and it reminds me of me and my brother growing up. We would always play hip hop and rap music in the car.” Price’s brother put him on to a lot of music because, as a kid, instead of watching cartoons like others his age, he resonated with music a lot more — especially Kanye West, who is his all time favorite artist and the sole inspiration of his radio show.
Price’s main topics for his show will be news and sports or anything he finds interesting. Recently he talked about Formula 1 and how many people are unfamiliar with the sport. Price would like to shed light on more black racers that went from humble beginnings to the top. Price will also be talking about his favorite Kanye West songs and his opinions on the albums as well.
This past week was all of the hosts’ first time running their show live and Price said the hardest part for him was making sure everything was on the right software, getting his files together and making sure all of his music was clean. “That was the most challenging part, but once I was actually, you know, in the radio station, I feel like it went really smoothly.”
During this experience Price has found a new interest in Radio part of his broadcast journalism major. “We do everything. My favorite things used to be Broadcast TV and news and now it’s radio.”
What sets apart Price’s show from everyone else’s is his ability to be natural. “I can talk very easily and I can talk a lot. Some people might be very nervous but when it comes to my show, It’s going to be very calm and very relaxing. I might even have some friends on my show to talk about sports and just play music.”
Students into hip hop and rap, sports, or who are die-hard Kanye West fan should make sure to check out Priceless Beats every Wednesday at 12:00 P.M.
Vibes With Jaz is another radio show run by Jasmine Denson, a Junior Broadcast Journalism major. Vibes with Jaz will be playing R&B. “I chose this genre because that’s the music I listen to. I love music that I can dance to, so whatever I could dance to, I added to my playlist.”
The most challenging part about running her show for the first time was talking. “When you see them numbers counting down, knowing that you have to pause it, and then press the button and start talking, and make sure your words are clear, loud and interesting.”
In contrast, Denson’s favorite part was actually playing her music on the radio where everyone can hear. “It was like, do y’all know know these songs? Do y’all really know ball for real ?”
What makes Vibes With Jaz different from the rest is her energy. “Well, I feel like everyone brings the energy but I’ll say like my music, nobody has the same energy while playing the same music I am.”

Deep Dives is a radio show run by sophomore Jermey Arballo, another fellow broadcast journalism major. On the radio he goes by Davey Jones where he takes a deep dive into rock music. “It’s just the most familiar to me, I guess. I’ve been listening to rock for a long time, so I felt like that would be, like, the easiest for me to pick, like, a wide variety of different songs.”
Arballo thinks Oklahoma has many rock fans, and although Langston might have fewer rock listeners, Arballo thinks his show is palatable enough for anyone to enjoy.
On Deep Dives, Arballo will be talking about some of his favorite bands. “I’m a Tool lover. If anything happens with Tool, they release a new album or something, I will be talking about it, and just general stuff, you know, sea themed stuff. Keep it on theme.”
Arballo says the biggest challenge for him was speaking live but also keeping his show on theme. “If someone was dropped in the middle, they wouldn’t even know they were on a voyage. You know, they didn’t know we were out at sea, they were just on a boat. So I need more sea sounds and stuff.”
Arballo says his favorite part about running his show was playing the music. He also enjoys his sea theme a lot and thinks that that is what sets his show apart from the rest. “I think everything about my show is unique. We haven’t ever really had a rock here and probably not an under the sea themed show either.”
