D’Monte Brown is starting his new basketball journey at Langston University for the 2022-2023 season. As a junior, Brown comes to Langston University as a transfer after playing one year at Miami Dade Community College.
As a 6-foot-4-inch guard from Petersburg, Virginia, he averaged 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists a game during his sophomore season at MDCC.
Brown was the leading scorer for the Sharks last season. He was named First Team All-Conference and Most Valuable Player in his last season at MDCC.
Brown said, “I feel like Langston was a good fit to take for my next chapter…I had one more year at a community college so, I had no choice but to transfer. I enjoyed my time there in Florida. It was a different atmosphere, and I really liked my teammates.”
Brown’s transition from MDCC to Langston has been smooth. Brown is focused on getting prepared for the season but also his education. He is a Business Major and plans to hopefully create his own business in the long run.

Brown has a daily routine: workout two times a day, lift two times a day, go to class and hang out in his room or with his teammates. He is working to keep his grades up in the classroom, but also to improve his GPA this school year.
Brown has been preparing since this summer. “I trained every day, going to the YMCA gym, and going to my high school gym. But what trained me the most was when I played in a professional league this summer which I dropped 37 points one game.”
But this season that’s not his focus, “My goal for this year is not about points because that’s going to come but instead to win games for Langston and help the team win a national championship.” His role plays a big part in winning a championship. “My role is to score and play defense on the best player every time.”
Being a student athlete isn’t easy and comes with a lot of stress. Brown shares his motivation strategy as he says, “Is just by waking up every day just thinking about what I can do to make this dream come true and what can I do to keep my head up and keep playing the game I love.”
Brown had a chance to play Division I basketball, but it all gotten taken away due to the obstacles throughout his career. Brown regrets that day every day, but he learned, “The mistakes you make will hurt you in the long run, and it will be the worst hurt of your life.”
Browns childhood was not like anyone else, as he shares, “Growing up was hard for me because I had to work for everything I got.” Brown’s way out of the struggle was the game of basketball.
“I started playing at the age of five, I was just playing around shooting and learning stuff on my own as I was growing up. High school is where I started to have a passion for it.” Brown says his inspiration comes from, “Myself… when I look in the mirror, its nobody else but me. Nobody else is pushing me but myself.” After finishing collegiate basketball Brown plans to play pro-league basketball overseas.
